Office Cabling Planning: Quantities, Labels and Testing

A clear office cabling brief helps suppliers quote the same equipment, installation and testing scope. Begin with a marked floor plan and an outlet schedule, then specify the components, installation and evidence needed at handover.

Office cabling: count outlets and measure routes

Assign each planned outlet a location and identifier. Include desks, access points, cameras, printers and planned additions. Distinguish the number of outlets from the number of devices connected today.

For office cabling, measure routed lengths rather than straight-line distances. Include the agreed termination and service allowance. For example, twelve routes averaging 25 metres total 300 metres before allowances; a single 305-metre box would leave very little margin. Plan the cuts and reels instead of relying only on the total.

Specify the connection arrangement

List patch panels, modules, faceplates and patch cords with the required cable category and compatibility. For a conventional copper layout, the common planning limits are a 90-metre permanent link and a 100-metre complete channel; the specific arrangement may require further allowances or restrictions.

If an access point or camera uses a field-terminated plug directly on the fixed cable, identify that arrangement explicitly so the correct test method is specified.

Office cabling: agree testing before installation

For office cabling, ask for certification to the agreed category or class using the appropriate test limit and adapters. A continuity or wiremap result alone does not certify the link’s transmission performance.

Request a result for each labelled link, with the test limit, result and identifiable tester records. Also agree how failed links will be corrected and retested. Keep the reports with the outlet schedule.

Define handover

Request updated drawings, port labels, component details and the completed test records. Confirm which patch cords and cabinet accessories are included, plus any installation or warranty conditions. These records make later moves and fault-finding easier.
