Compare PDU types by the measurements, alerts and control functions you need in the rack. Start with the task you need to perform, then ask the supplier to confirm the feature on the exact proposed model.

PDU types: basic and locally metered
A basic PDU distributes power. A locally metered model adds a display of specified measurements, such as current. Check whether the reading applies to the whole input, an outlet bank or another point.
Remote monitoring
A monitored PDU provides remote access to supported measurements or status information. Confirm the measurement level: total input monitoring is different from measuring every outlet. Also ask which alerts, interfaces and network-management functions the model includes.
Switched PDU types: outlet control
A switched PDU can control supported outlets, allowing operations such as a remote power cycle. Switching does not automatically mean that every outlet has individual energy metering. Therefore, check monitoring and control separately.
Use a simple requirement statement: “show total rack current remotely,” “measure each device,” or “restart individual outlets.” These describe different needs and may lead to different products.
PDU types: plan their operation
Next, ask who will receive alerts, who can change outlet states and who will manage access. Identify whether sensors or management accessories cost extra. Verify restart behaviour, sequencing and configuration backup where these functions matter.
Then map outlets to devices before enabling remote control. An accurate outlet schedule helps an administrator distinguish a device to restart from a network connection needed to reach the PDU itself.
Compare model features directly
Request a feature checklist for the exact Clever, ATEN or other model under consideration: local display, remote monitoring, input or outlet measurements, outlet switching, supported sensors and supplied accessories. A series name or the word “intelligent” is not enough to establish the full feature set.
