Laptop RAM upgrade: check the exact model first
Reviewed 10 October 2026. Match the supported DDR generation, module format, capacity and speed. Check whether memory is soldered, socketed or a mixture. A DDR4 laptop cannot accept a DDR5 SO-DIMM merely because it has the same capacity.

How much RAM should I add?
Check memory use with your usual applications open. More capacity can help when the system is short of memory; it does not automatically make the processor faster. Verify the documented capacity and supported module arrangement.
Does faster RAM always run at its advertised speed?
No. The memory controller, firmware and installed modules determine the supported operating speed. A faster-rated module may operate at a lower supported speed.
Can soldered memory be upgraded?
Soldered memory is not changed like a socketed SO-DIMM. Some laptops have soldered memory plus an expansion slot; others do not have a normal expansion option. Check the exact machine.
