How to select desktop RAM
Reviewed 10 October 2026. Match the motherboard’s supported DDR generation, module format, capacity and speed. DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5 are different standards. A desktop UDIMM is different from a laptop SO-DIMM.
Check the motherboard, not just the CPU generation
Richcom’s Intel Essential, Standard and Professional Office PCs use DDR4 motherboards. The AMD office examples use DDR5. Some processors support more than one memory generation, but the motherboard and its slots determine which modules the finished system can accept.

Prices are in LKR, checked on 10 October 2026. These listings specify 288-pin DDR4 UDIMMs, rather than laptop SO-DIMMs.

Capacity, slots and channel arrangement
Check installed modules, free slots and the supported maximum before ordering. Choose capacity for the workload and use supported matched configurations where appropriate. Adding capacity does not itself increase a module’s rated transfer speed.
Can DDR4 and DDR5 be mixed?
No. Their electrical requirements and keying differ. Even where both desktop UDIMMs use 288 pins, they are not interchangeable.
Server and branded desktop requirements
Check the exact system’s requirements for ECC, registered or unbuffered memory, voltage and supported capacity. Standard desktop RAM is not automatically suitable for a server.
Before fitting
Share the motherboard or complete desktop model and existing memory. Confirm the module, operating speed, fitting charge, testing and warranty terms. See the Intel and AMD office comparison for complete-system examples.
