Compare copper vs fibre by the whole link: endpoint interfaces, route, speed, distance and remote power. This guide explains what to include when asking for a complete connection between office devices, floors or buildings.

Copper vs fibre: where copper fits
Twisted-pair copper commonly connects office devices through Ethernet ports and can carry standards-based PoE when the equipment and cabling support it. Confirm channel limits for the intended application rather than selecting a cable solely by its reel length.
Where fibre can fit
Fibre carries optical signals and is immune to electromagnetic interference in the signal path. It can suit backbone and longer-distance links, but the supported distance depends on the exact fibre and optical interfaces.
Do not assume that every fibre cable provides the same reach. Specify single-mode or multimode fibre, connector type, link speed and compatible optics at both ends. Standard optical fibre does not deliver PoE; provide an appropriate power arrangement for the remote equipment.
Copper vs fibre between floors or buildings
Measure the actual cable route, including risers, entry points and termination locations. Ask the installer to assess environmental exposure and electrical considerations. Metallic armour or other conductive parts of a fibre installation still require appropriate treatment.
For copper vs fibre quotations, confirm whether the proposal includes termination hardware, patch leads, optical modules, installation and testing. A cable-only price is not directly comparable with a complete working link.
