Managed vs. Unmanaged Network Switches: Which Do You Need?

The managed vs unmanaged switch decision starts with how much control your network needs. Before comparing brands, decide whether you only need more Ethernet connections or need to configure, monitor and maintain the network.

Network switches for a managed vs unmanaged comparison

Managed vs unmanaged: straightforward connectivity

An unmanaged switch generally works without user configuration. It can suit a simple network where the connected devices do not require switch-level policy changes. However, check the model specifications: automatic features do not provide the same control as a managed interface.

Managed: configuration and visibility

Managed switches can provide configurable features such as VLANs, traffic prioritisation and monitoring. Available functions vary by model. However, buying a managed switch does not automatically configure or secure the network; someone must plan and maintain its settings.

Managed vs unmanaged: check smart-switch features

Labels such as smart, smart managed and fully managed are not a complete specification. Some smart switches offer limited routing, while others focus on Layer 2 features. Check the specific feature list and limits instead of relying on the label.

Write a requirements checklist

For a managed vs unmanaged comparison, describe the groups of devices that need separate networks, the information your support team needs to monitor, and who will administer the equipment. Ask the supplier to identify how the proposed model meets each requirement.

Include the management method in the comparison: local web access, command line or cloud management where supported. Also ask whether the functions need subscriptions or licences, and what happens if a service is unavailable.

For a small shared office, the best choice is the one that supports the agreed design and can be maintained by the people responsible for it. Port count alone cannot answer that question.
