Network switch planning starts with your site layout, equipment list and service requirements. Plan data capacity and power together, then check how the network should behave during an outage or equipment failure.

Prepare a device schedule
Record each device’s location, connection speed, power method and destination. For CCTV, include cameras, recorders and viewing stations. For offices, include computers, printers, phones, access points and shared storage.
Mark future additions separately so they are visible in the port and PoE allowance. A spare data port is not necessarily a spare powered port.
Check camera traffic and power
For CCTV network switch planning, use the camera and recorder specifications to plan the recording path. If 16 cameras each send a configured 8 Mbps stream across one uplink, that stream traffic totals 128 Mbps before overhead and other traffic. A 100 Mbps uplink would not carry that example workload.
This is a planning example, not a standard camera bitrate. Account for the selected recording settings, simultaneous viewing streams and the recorder’s limits. Check power requirements under the device’s demanding operating modes, including illumination or accessories where fitted.
Network switch planning: review the installation
For network switch planning, include cable routes, cabinet space, ventilation, power availability and who can access the equipment. Ask whether the proposed switch’s noise and operating environment suit its location. Specify uplink endpoints and distances rather than requesting fibre ports alone.
Include power backup and handover
If continuity is required, include the switch and the equipment it powers in the UPS load plan. Also identify the recorder, router and other dependencies that need backup.
Agree a handover check covering port labels, negotiated link speeds, device operation, intended network separation and configuration records. Have the installer test the complete service rather than only individual port lights.
