Plan battery service for your UPS
If your UPS gives less backup time than expected, tell us its full model, the equipment connected to it and any displayed alarm. Request an assessment before selecting batteries, because the UPS capacity alone does not identify the correct battery arrangement.

UPS battery backup time depends on the equipment load and the exact battery configuration. A useful request states the equipment power in watts, the required duration and whether the system must shut down safely or keep operating.

Check UPS battery backup time against model data
First, use the manufacturer’s runtime chart or selector for the exact UPS model, connected load and supported battery packs. However, a VA rating by itself is not a runtime promise. Therefore, do not transfer a result from a similar model or a different battery configuration.
Also check what batteries are included in the quoted configuration. A UPS sold for use with external batteries may need a separately specified battery system before it can provide the requested backup.
UPS battery backup time: start with the energy needed
A 600 W load running for 30 minutes needs 300 Wh delivered to the load: 600 × 0.5 = 300. However, this is an energy requirement, not a battery purchase specification. Actual battery sizing must account for conversion losses, discharge behaviour, operating limits and reserve.
For example, six 12 V, 9 Ah batteries in one series string have a nominal rating of 72 V, 9 Ah, or 648 Wh. Series connection adds voltage, not amp-hours. Dividing 648 Wh by the load does not establish guaranteed runtime.
Ask for a comparable quotation
Next, request the UPS model, battery model and quantity, runtime at your stated watts, and the basis for that runtime. In addition, ask how battery ageing, recharge after an outage and future equipment additions affect the proposal. Have external battery arrangements checked against the UPS manufacturer’s compatibility requirements.
Finally, keep a copy of the agreed load schedule with the installation records so a later runtime check uses the same assumptions.
