Plan battery service for your UPS

Whether you are reviewing backup time or planning battery work, start with the exact UPS model and the load it supports. Tell us your required runtime and any battery warnings. The proposed configuration needs to match the system and its charging requirements.

UPS planning follows the complete service, including its equipment, network connection and storage. A practical plan follows the whole service: the equipment doing the work, its network connection and any storage it depends on.

Network equipment and patch cables in a rack for UPS planning

UPS planning for office and shared equipment

First, list the workstations, essential monitors, shared storage and network equipment included in the project. Mark which users need time to save work and which services must continue operating. Ask whether compatible shutdown software is available for the proposed UPS and systems.

For a single computer, start with Richcom’s existing PC UPS buying guide. This planning guide focuses on shared equipment and multiple dependencies.

CCTV and network dependencies

For CCTV UPS planning, also include the recorder, camera power supplies or PoE switches, and any router needed for remote viewing. Distinguish between local recording and off-site access: keeping the local router powered does not establish that the internet provider’s network will remain available.

When a PoE switch powers the cameras, account for its complete AC input load, including supplied devices and losses. Do not count the same camera power twice. Note operating conditions such as night illumination when compiling the equipment demand.

UPS planning: rack and installation checks

Next, check UPS planning details: rack space, mounting depth, weight support, ventilation and the required mounting hardware. Check input and output connectors, available outlets and any PDU requirements. However, more battery packs can extend supported runtime, but they do not increase the UPS output power rating.

Use Richcom’s existing rackmount UPS article as the rackmount resource. Provide cabinet dimensions and the equipment list when asking for a proposal.

Define the acceptance check

Ask for a documented check against your agreed load, required backup time and shutdown or recording behaviour. Therefore, record which equipment was connected so future additions trigger a review of the original plan.

For example, record whether a camera still records locally when off-site access is unavailable.
